PTE Academic vs PTE Core: Which Exam Should You Take?
The choice is usually made for you by your goal: PTE Academic is the test for university admission and most study visas; PTE Core is the general-English test IRCC accepts for Canadian permanent-residence programs. The exams share DNA but differ in tasks, word limits and how their scores are read.

The simple decision rule
Applying to study, or to a migration program that asks for PTE Academic points? Take Academic. Applying for Canadian PR or a Canadian work program that speaks in CLB levels? Take Core. If both could work, note that Core's task list is slightly shorter and skips the essay, while Academic is the more widely accepted of the two internationally.
Preparation transfers heavily either way: the reading section is identical in shape, listening nearly so, and the speaking trait scores — fluency and pronunciation — are the same skills in both exams.
