PTE Read Aloud
In PTE Read Aloud you are shown a short text and must read it out loud, clearly and naturally, into the microphone. It is scored on content (did you say every word), oral fluency (did you speak at an even pace without hesitating or repeating) and pronunciation (are the words recognisable). It contributes to both your Speaking and your Reading score, which makes it one of the highest-value tasks in the exam.

Fluency outranks perfection. A steady, confident read with one mispronounced word scores far better than a hesitant, stop-start read with none.

Use the preparation time to read the text silently and mark the natural pauses — commas, full stops and long noun phrases.

Never go back to correct yourself. A repeated word breaks fluency and costs more than the original slip.

Start speaking within a second of the tone. Long silences at the start can cause the microphone to stop recording.

Read Aloud texts circulate through live exams for long stretches, so the passage on your screen has often been reported before. Meeting a practised text means the pauses are already planned and the difficult words already rehearsed — which converts directly into the even, confident delivery that scores highest on fluency.

How long do you get for PTE Read Aloud?
You get roughly 30 to 40 seconds to prepare, depending on the length of the text, and then 40 seconds to record your answer. The recording stops automatically at the end of that window, or after about three seconds of silence.
Does Read Aloud affect the Reading score?
Yes. Read Aloud contributes to both the Speaking score and the Reading score, so it carries more weight than a speaking-only task and is worth prioritising in practice.
Is it better to be fluent or accurate in Read Aloud?
Fluency. The scoring rewards a smooth, even delivery, so it is better to read straight through with a small pronunciation slip than to stop and repeat yourself. Repetition and long pauses are penalised more heavily than a single mispronounced word.
