How Is PTE Scored?
The official PTE exam reports one overall score and four skill scores — listening, reading, speaking and writing — all on a 10–90 scale, and Pearson scores every item by computer. Understanding how marks flow between tasks and skills is the cheapest score improvement available.
The four things to understand about PTE scoring
Everything is computer-scored
Pearson assesses speech with automated speech models for fluency and pronunciation, writing with criteria-based automated scoring, and objective tasks deterministically. There is no human-examiner variance — only criteria.
Tasks feed multiple skills
Many tasks are cross-scored: Read Aloud feeds speaking and reading, Write from Dictation feeds listening and writing, Summarize Spoken Text feeds listening and writing. Your skill bands are woven together.
Two tasks carry negative marking
Multiple Choice Multiple Answers (reading and listening) and Highlight Incorrect Words deduct a point per wrong selection inside the question, floored at zero. Everything else has no penalty.
Form rules gate writing marks
Word and sentence limits are hard gates — a 76-word Summarize Written Text or a 121-word email caps its score regardless of content quality.
Overall score vs skill scores
The overall 10–90 score is not a simple average — it is computed from all scored items across the exam. Universities typically set an overall requirement (often 58–79); Canadian immigration reads PTE Core per skill through CLB conversion, where your lowest skill decides. That difference should shape your preparation: Academic candidates optimise the overall, Core candidates hunt their weakest band.
Frequently asked questions
Is PTE scored by humans or computers?
Entirely by machine — acoustic models for speech, automated criteria scoring for writing, deterministic marking for objective tasks. That is also why realistic practice needs machine scoring.
What is a good PTE score?
It depends on the goal: many universities ask for 58–65 overall, competitive programs 79+; for Canadian immigration, PTE Core converts per skill to CLB levels, where common targets are CLB 7 and CLB 9.
Does PTE have negative marking?
Only inside two task families: Multiple Choice Multiple Answers and Highlight Incorrect Words, where each wrong selection cancels a correct one within that question. No other task deducts marks.
