PTE Reading Scoring, Explained
PTE reading is scored purely objectively, but the rules differ by task — partial credit per blank, per-pair credit in Re-order Paragraphs, and negative marking in Multiple Choice Multiple Answers. Knowing the rules changes how you should answer.
The rules, task by task
Fill in the Blanks — per blank
Each correct blank scores a point independently; a hard blank should never stop you from banking the easy ones around it.
Re-order Paragraphs — per adjacent pair
Marks come from each pair of paragraphs in correct sequence, not the whole order. Getting a chain of three right scores two pairs even if the rest is wrong.
Multiple Choice Multiple — negative marking
Each wrong selection cancels a right one (floor zero). Select only options you can defend; 'tick everything' scores exactly zero.
Single answer — one mark
Standard right-or-wrong. These are the questions to answer fast, banking pooled-clock time for the fill-ins.
Reading marks from outside the reading part
Read Aloud contributes to reading as well as speaking, and the Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks feeds writing too — the cross-scoring web means a weak reading band is sometimes best fixed with disciplined Read Aloud practice.

How is Re-order Paragraphs scored?
By correctly adjacent pairs: each pair of paragraphs in the right relative order earns a mark. Partial orders score partial credit — it is never all-or-nothing.
Which PTE reading tasks have negative marking?
Only Multiple Choice Multiple Answers. Each incorrect selection deducts one within the question, with the score floored at zero.
How much time per reading question?
The section shares one pooled clock (roughly two minutes per question on average) — you allocate it. Fill-in-the-blank tasks usually deserve the biggest share.
