PTE Listening Scoring, Explained
Listening mixes every scoring style PTE has: criteria-graded writing in Summarize Spoken Text, per-word credit in Write from Dictation, and objective tasks including both negative-marking formats — all after audio that plays exactly once.
Where listening marks come from
Write from Dictation — per word
Every correctly typed word scores, order-independent, and the marks feed listening AND writing. It is the densest source of marks per minute in the exam.
Summarize Spoken Text — criteria
Graded on content, form and language like a writing task (50–70 words Academic, 20–30 Core), and it also contributes to the writing band.
Highlight Incorrect Words — negative marking
Click only words you are sure differ from the audio — each wrong click cancels a right one.
Fill in the Blanks & multiple choice
Per-blank credit for fill-ins; single-answer items score one; Multiple Choice Multiple carries negative marking.
The end-of-exam factor
Listening is Part 3 — you meet its highest-value task, Write from Dictation, at maximum fatigue. Practising dictation when tired (end of a study session, end of a mock) is more realistic training than practising it fresh.
