PTE Speaking Scoring, Explained
Every PTE speaking response is scored on up to three dimensions — content, oral fluency and pronunciation — by acoustic and language models. Fluency and pronunciation are trait scores that follow you across every task, which is why they respond to deliberate practice faster than any other speaking metric.
What each speaking task is scored on
| Task | Content scoring | Also feeds |
|---|---|---|
| Read Aloud | Words read correctly against the text | Reading |
| Repeat Sentence | Words repeated in the right order | Listening |
| Describe Image | Key features of the image covered | Speaking only |
| Retell Lecture (Academic) | Key points of the lecture covered | Listening |
| Answer Short Question | Correct answer (one mark) | Listening/vocabulary |
| Respond to a Situation | Required response points covered | Speaking only |
| Summarize Group Discussion (Academic) | Key points across speakers | Listening |
Fluency and pronunciation — the trait scores
Oral fluency rewards smooth, natural-rhythm delivery — not speed. Pronunciation rewards intelligible sounds and word stress — not accent. Because both are scored on every task by the same acoustic assessment, a habit fixed once (pausing mid-phrase, swallowed word endings) pays back across the entire section. PTE Monster's practice scoring grades both traits on every recording so you can watch them trend.
Frequently asked questions
What are the three PTE speaking criteria?
Content (what you said), oral fluency (rhythm and continuity) and pronunciation (clarity of sounds). Scripted tasks like Read Aloud score content by word match; open tasks score key-point coverage.
Does accent affect PTE speaking scores?
No — pronunciation scoring measures intelligibility, not accent. Clear sounds, stress and pacing in any native or non-native accent score well.
Why did I lose speaking marks with correct content?
Usually fluency: long silences, restarts and self-corrections lower the fluency trait even when content is complete. Smooth partial content typically outscores halting complete content.
